DENVER, Colorado: A second group of wolves was released in Colorado under a controversial, voter-driven initiative to reintroduce the predators into the state.
Last week, 15 gray wolves from Canada were released in Colorado's central mountains over three days, but state wildlife officials announced the operation only on January 19, after it was completed. Colorado Parks and Wildlife explained they delayed the announcement due to threats against staff, including phone calls and social media posts.
In addition to the Canadian wolves, a female wolf and her four pups previously released in another part of Colorado were relocated to the same area - Eagle and Pitkin counties, known for ski resorts and public recreational land. These five wolves were part of a pack captured in August after one male repeatedly killed livestock in Grand County, northwest of Denver.
The Canadian wolves, seven males, and eight females, were captured in British Columbia with help from local authorities, where wolves are sometimes culled to protect caribou. Hillary Ward from the B.C. Ministry of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship praised the collaboration between the two regions.
Colorado voters approved wolf reintroduction in 2020, with urban support outweighing concerns from rural communities over livestock attacks. The first wolves were released a year ago, leading to over two dozen livestock depredation claims. Two of those wolves were illegally killed.
Colorado plans to release 30 to 50 wolves over five years to restore their population in the Western U.S., where they once roamed from Canada to the Southwest deserts.
